Following story courtesy of the St Helens Star LIVING with Cystic Fibrosis hasn't stopped a young girl from St Helens enjoying the things she loves most like dancing, singing and drama. And now Rachel Maskell's dedication to her hobbies has won her recognition from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust's Breathing Life Awards. The eight-year-old was nominated by her father in the Junior Artistic Section for her determination to carry on performing even when she is ill. The family heard only the day before the awards ceremony that Rachel had won and dashed down to London for the star-studded night. Unfortunately Rachel couldn't attend the entire awards ceremony because she had recently recovered from MRSA, but was brought on stage to collect her award from singers Keedie and Andy Scott-Lee.
Rachel was diagnosed with the disease 18 months ago after suffering from health problems since the age of five. In December 2003 she was admitted to hospital because she had difficulty breathing where a genetic test finally revealed the condition. Her mum Tracey said: "It's been really difficult, Rachel was a normal seven-year-old before it happened. "But at the moment she won't let it stop her and she won't give in. Even when she's poorly she doesn't miss anything" Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease, which causes thick mucus to cover vital organs such as the lungs and the pancreas. Sufferers are prone to chest infections and have cannot digest food properly causing them to become malnourished. Rachel can take up to 52 doses of medication in a day, ranging from pills to inhaled medication. She also has two sessions of physiotherapy a day, including a pre-school bounce on a 14ft trampoline in her back garden. The fact that Rachel leads such an active life actually helps her condition. Rachel has performed at many competitions and recently became the Under 10 Trio Dance Champion. Rachel, a pupil at Whiston Willis Primary School, also loves singing and acting and has recently won the role of Molly in Annie The Musical, which will be performed at De La Salle School. |
