ElektraDiva's Interpretation
of
Vissi d’Arte -  From Puccini's Opera "Tosca"
Arranged exclusively for Keedie - by Darryl Way

This classic backdrop is produced by Nicola Jarvis at KeedieOnline

Vissi d’Arte from Puccini’s “Tosca” is the aria Tosca sings just prior to giving in to the evil police chief, Scarpia’s deal. This being, that she gives herself to Scarpia, in return for him sparing her lovers life. Scarpia double crosses Tosca, and carries out the execution regardless. Tosca devastated by his treachery, kills Scarpia and then grief stricken and pursued by Scarpia’s agents, throws herself out of the window.

In the aria, Tosca sings of how she has lived her life for art, always been devout, kind to all God’s creatures and now that she is suffering, cannot understand why God repays her devotion in this way.

“ElektraDiva’s interpretation of “Vissi d’Arte” takes a different spin from Puccini’s original. In this version, Tosca’s heart is pounding in fear and anticipation of what is to befall her. She is not only wondering why God repays her in this way – she’s absolutely furious with him. This is not a slow descent into hell, this is a fast gallop to a collision with her ultimate destiny”.
