Benefit Year Dates Announced

The Warwickshire County Cricket Club General Committee has awarded Ashley Giles a benefit year in 2006 in recognition of 13 years loyal service to the Club.

Ashley, 32, joined the staff in 1992 and made his first-class County Championship debut for Warwickshire in 1993 against Kent at Canterbury. Since that time he has played in almost 100 first-class matches taking over 300 wickets at an average of 25 with the ball, and has also become an extremely useful lower order batsman with more than 3,000 runs to his name. In 1996 Ashley was awarded his county cap.

On the International front Ashley has become the main stay of England’s spin bowling attack since making his one day international debut in 1997 against Australia at the Oval followed by his Test Match debut in 1998 against South Africa at Old Trafford. With 47 Test matches and 62 one day internationals “under his belt” Ashley is recognized as one of the pivotal characters in the England dressing room, and he was chosen as one of the Wisden Cricketers’ of the Year in 2005.

Commenting on the announcement, Chief Executive Dennis Amiss said: “We are delighted to award Ashley a benefit year in 2006. He is a wonderful ambassador for the game of cricket and is widely respected as one of the great competitors both for Warwickshire and England. We are sure that Ashley will be well supported in his Benefit Year, and wish him every success”.

Benefit year kicks off in style

Ashley's benefit year kicked off with the Benefit Launch Ball at the Metropole Hilton at Birmingham's NEC. The event drew great support with a total of 780 guests including eight of Ashley's Ashes winning team mates. The evening was compared superbly by Nick Hancock and the evening's entertainment included a Q&A session with Freddie Flintoff and Michael Vaughan, fine performances of Nessun Dorma and Jerusalem by Keedie and the evening ended with music from top 80s band Go West.

Guest speakers included Warwickshire's Dougie Brown and Professor Charles Craddock who both described the research work and fundraising activities of Ashley's nominated charity Cure Leukaemia.

The evening's auction was very successful thanks to a number of fantastic prizes donated by Vodaphone, Rumsey Travel and others. The star auction was a limited edition Connaught Syracuse Sports Car complete with V10 engine.

Carling Cup Final: Bring The Noise!

Carling is aiming to create the world's loudest VIP area after inviting fans to take over its corporate suites at Sunday's showpiece final.

MILLENNIUM STADIUM

After measuring the volume of both sets of fans at last year's final, Carling is hoping to go one better this year by cranking up the atmosphere in the traditionally hushed corporate areas.

Having handed over its entire contracted allocation of almost 900 match tickets - many including hospitality - to Manchester United and Wigan supporters, Carling is determined to ensure they bring the noise... to all parts of the stadium.

Fans are being encouraged to sing to their hearts' content in both the Millennium Suite and the Riverside Terrace and Cardiff Council environmental health officers have been drafted in to measure the volume in corporate areas.

Sexy songstress
Keedie will even warm up for her rendition of the National Anthem by joining the fans to give them tips on how to really turn up the volume. In exchange they will teach her a couple of favourite club chants. Catering staff will be issued with earplugs to deal with the increased sound levels!

FDA Annual Dinner Dance
Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London.

This year's FDA-10 Annual Dinner was held at the new location of the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park lane, London on Monday, May 15th, 2006.

The night saw the most magnificent FDA Annual Dinner yet, with 1,000 of the industry's finest out on form to help the FDA celebrate its 10th anniversary and to help celebrate the achievements of this growing industry.

For the first time, members and affiliates were invited to bring along corporate financiers and other business influencers, to share the successes of the industry with a wider audience. The night was also sponsored by the Financial Times; and in celebration of this fact a full-page colour ad was taken out in the paper on the same day. This kicked off an advertising campaign that will run for the rest of the FDA-10 year, raising the profile of the industry to a wider audience.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and a feeling of 'coming of age' as everybody arrived in their formal attire, keen to experience the new venue. The balcony provided much more room than in previous years for people to network and mingle during the welcome drinks, meanwhile the past 10 chairman were having their photo taken with a special 10th birthday cake.

When everyone was seated for dinner, we were treated to a surprise performance from Keedie, a fantastic opera singer who treated the audience to a version of Jerusalem.

Then Adrian Sainsbury (FDA Chairman) announced that the venue for the FDA-10 Annual Conference would be in Rome. This was received very well and he also went on to highlight some recent achievements of the trade association before dinner was served. At this point, the professionalism of our new dinner venue became very evident. The food was fantastic and the service was impeccable. Even serving 1,000 people the waiting staff were co-ordinated and extremely professional. As a venue the Grosvenor certainly proved themselves to be a cut above the rest.

After dinner it was our after-dinner speakers turn to take the stage and Rt Hon Sir John Major did not disappoint. He came over exactly as he has done all these years. He tended to concentrate on the more serious side of politics, but interspersed it with amusing stories from his time at No 10, which was well balanced and very interesting. To finish his presentation he also took questions from the floor, which provided some very interesting insights to his own opinion in one or two areas.

(We are also happy to report that on the night over £10,300 was raised in support of The Gene Machine, a leukaemia charity founded by Hilary Craft at Regency Factors. Thank you very much for your support of this worthwhile cause.)

Finally it was down to Adrian to say a final thank you before getting the party into full swing with Craig McMurdo and That Swing Thang who provided the fabulous music for the rest of evening. The new venue provided plenty of space for people to either dance, get a drink and network, or just sit, rest and watch the rest of the party, which went on until 2am.

Aled Jones  Keedie

Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, 7.30 pm

Nottingham Symphony Orchestra and Nottingham Festival Opera welcome you "All Aboard" the Orient Express for a thrilling musical journey of opera favourites and popular classics featuring Aled Jones and Keedie. This concert promises to be a significant event in Nottingham’s musical calendar and represents a unique promotional opportunity for the local and wider business community.

News! An enthusiastic audience of over fifteen hundred clapped and cheered at Nottingham Symphony Orchestra's concert in Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall on Saturday night. Hosted by singer and TV presenter Aled Jones and featuring top cross-over artist Keedie NSO were joined by Nottingham Festival Opera Chorus and children from Stagecoach (Beeston) for a evening of popular classics, show tunes and film music on the theme of The Orient-Express. Sadly, a virus infection forced Aled to retire part-way through the second half but his place was ably filled, at very short notice, by local singing star Simon Theobold.

May 2006 Concert Review...William Ruff writing in the
Nottingham Evening Post - 22/5/06

It's all aboard for a musical treat

This wasn't the first musical journey I've been on but it was the first on the Orient Express, and the first to stop at so many destinations steeped in history and culture.

Thanks to the musical wizardry of the NSO, the NFO Chorus and the children of Beeston Stagecoach school, the audience was picked up in Eric Coates' Knightsbridge and whisked off to Instanbul, Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Rome and Paris accompanied by Italian opera, Hungarian dances, Offenbach's can-can, Sullivan's Gondoliers, Strauss polkas, and much more besides.

Keedie proved to be a popular (but, to my taste, over-amplified) choice as solo vocalist, equally at home in opera and musicals. Derek Williams and Andrew Nicklin brought sparkle to all the numbers as conductors, and as violin/piano duo played Kreislers's fiendishly difficult Tambourin Chinois.

Aled Jones was a convivial host and guide, until his viral infection meant that he had to leave the train just before Paris. Luckily the multi-talented Simon Thoebold leapt into the breach, as well as bringing the house down as Rossini's Figaro and Mozart's Don Giovanni. The concert crackled with energy from beginning to end. The audience loved every minute of it.

Bradley Walsh’s Top Tracks

Bradley Walsh

Bradley Walsh

Self-confessed family man Bradley’s on top form right now as Corrie’s cheeky cockney Danny – he’s got away with seducing his son’s girlfriend and heartlessly swizzling Mike Baldwin out of his money…

Here, the ex Wheel of Fortune host gives us his top five music choices and reminisces about dancing in his mother’s platform shoes and knowing Robbie Williams as a boy.

Past track - Fly Me to the Moon – Tony Bennett

“It was my aunt who first got me hooked on Tony and I’ve been a massive fan ever since - he was a great influence on me when I was younger. He’s probably my favourite artist. I love the way he sings this track – very slow and dreamy.”

Present track - A Design for Life – Manic Street Preachers

“The lead singer’s voice is amazing in this song. There’s still a certain amount of mystique attached to the band – the fact that Richie went missing only adds to it.”

Future track - My Reason – Keedie Babb

“I met this young lady years ago when she was about 10 and she’d entered a talent show I was judging – now she’s 23 with this amazing voice - it has a certain quality that really speaks to you.” Bradley also spotted Robbie Williams’ potential when he was a mere whippersnapper. “When I worked as a Blue Coat we used to play football in our spare time. One of the entertainers was Pete Conway, who’d bring his eight-year-old lad down for a kickabout. That little lad was Robbie. Pete’s a very genial and captivating man and Rob’s just the same.”

Dedication track - The Prayer – Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli

Family is what keeps Bradley grounded and he’s chosen this track for his clan. “There’s nothing I love more than going home and seeing my family. Sometimes it’s hard to play Danny because I’m such a family man and it goes against the grain trying to relate to someone who totally isn’t. This song is for all my family. It has a marvellous celestial quality in it. Celine is a great singer and Andrea is probably my favourite opera singer.”

All-time favourite track - Dancing Queen – Abba

“I think this is great. You hear the start of it and you just can’t stop yourself from getting up and dancing - everyone does. It’s camp and colourful - I’m not sure what that says about me, but I just love it. In the Seventies, I used to borrow my mum’s platform shoes to go out in – I was so desperate to be taller. I’d be in my flares, dancing to Abba. You can’t beat style like that!”

The Grant & Anthea Summer Ball - an annual fundraising event hosted by Grant Bovey and Anthea Turner - has raised in excess of £450,000 for charity - on a night to remember in Surrey.

500 guests were present at the event, now in its fourth consecutive year staged in the gardens of Grant and Anthea’s stunning country home. Anthea Turners comments on her Summer Ball

The ball was INCREDIBLE! I loved every second of it, it was simply amazing.

We were on a table with Mike Reid, some other randoms and I was sitting next to the talent agent, Tony Fox hehe. :]] On the table to our right was Tony Blackburn, Duncan James and some famous footballer, I can’t remember his name hehe. x_x On the table to our left was this opera person Keedie and Neil and Christine Hamilton (who were commmpletely drunk haha). And that was just the ones near us. I have never seen so many famous people in one room in my life.

It all took place in Anthea’s grounds, in the biggest marquee imaginable. It had two stages, 6 ma-husive plasma screens on the walls to display what was happening on stage and the results of the silent auction. Chandeliers, dancefloor, one of those paperazzi things where everyone gets their photo taken and even the toilets were like WOW haha. :P

Throughout the night, the silent auction was taking place. It had amazing prizes, most of which I can’t remember now lol. I think they raised £300,000 from that alone. Then later on, the big auction took place. This had a huge shopping trip with Elizabeth Hurley, a shirt worn by Sol Campbell in this years World Cup, signed by the entire England team, a £400,000 apartment in London, a trip to see Amanda Holden filiming ‘Wild At Heart’ in South Africa, lunch with Kim Cattrall, a yacht trip and a Ferrari. When they did the Ferrari it was like some mystery prize and all the stage curtains went up and it was on stage and everyone was like whooaaaa. Seriously haha. I’m getting so carried away just talking about this lol. ^_^

Performances were from Bobby Davro (who was utterly hilarious), The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Keedie, Duncan James, Beverley Skeet, CHICO haha  - what a legend and Lulu. We were right up the front when Chico and Lulu performed, so I have pictures taken like 2 feet away from them hehe. Chico auctioned his shirt that he was wearing that he also wore in his video or something and it went to a guy on the table next to us for £15,000. o_0 Lulu was alsooo amazing. Plus she had some hot guitarist haha. Got some great pics of her. She left right after her performance, so no one could get her autograph. But, I went and saw Anthea and she took my autograph book and ran to see her before she left, so I’m the ONLY person that got her autograph that night. :]]

There was a full English breakfast served at about 1:30am. Yummy hehe. Then we hit the dance floor to some band called Cameron (which had another hot guitarist lmao). Then they started playing like Kanye West, Nelly Furtado etc. Chico was dancing with everyone as well hehe. It was so funny to see all the famous people getting down with the rest of us lol. :P I said hey to Anthea’s step-daughters who I used to hang out with alot. Then, I think we had to walk home.

Since we only live next door to all this, it wasn’t very far. But, when you’re wearing stilettos, you’re quite drunk and it’s pitch black - it wasn’t a very nice walk home hehe. Sorry I don’t have pictures up yet. I need to pester my Dad to put them on the USB key since I didn’t have my camera that night.

And also, sorry this is sooo long. But, it was the best night of my life - I think you should allow me some poetic license hehe. :P

KEEDIE VIES FOR RIVIERA TITLE

Chart topping classical singing sensation
Keedie Babb is in the running for another top spot this year - as the Face of the English Riviera 2006.

The 23-year-old only entered the charity competition when she went along to support a friend and was persuaded to put her face up for the title.

But if Keedie, of Moorview End, Marldon pips all 79 other entrants to the post, she'll hand the title over to a runner-up, say her parents.

The annual competition is this year being held in aid of two charities; The Herald Express HAT Appeal and Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

Eighty hopefuls, including Keedie, were featured in the Herald Express yesterday and 50 finalists are to be selected by public vote.

They will then fight it out on the catwalk at the Grand Hotel, Torquay on August 24.

The winner will be announced at the Fashion Ball on September 29 at the Riviera International Centre, Torquay - where Keedie could be singing.

Maria Babb, Keedie's mum, said: "She just went along to support her friend Kelly and they said to her 'why don't you enter too?'

"So she did and she said 'I just did it for a laugh and because it's for charity - it's a good cause. I'm not expecting to get through but I'll sing at the final if I do.'

"I think she would definitely hand it over to a runner-up if she won because it's not what she wants to do."

Just this month Keedie, who landed a £1million EMI deal in 2004, was singing to a crowd of 23,000 at the Cricket Twenty20 finals at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

Maria said: "Everybody loved her and the Sugababes came on stage afterwards and congratulated her on her performance."

And looking to the future, her father, Gary, said: "She's got a few high profile gigs in the pipeline."

If Keedie performs at the FOER final at the Grand Hotel, she'll bring a wealth of international professional singing experience back home to where she started.

After first being spotted at a Stairway to the Stars competition in Torquay she has toured the globe, performing alongside Shayne Ward, winner of X-Factor 2005, the English Cricket Team, Duncan from Blue and at Al Pacino and Andrew Lloyd Webber events.

She is also a regular at Anthea Turner's private parties.

The winning Face of English Riviera 2006 will get the chance to learn and work alongside professional models at the English Riviera Fashion week show.

Prizes include a place on the books of Dammers Modelling Agency, a professional portfolio by an international photographer and £500 of Lancome beauty products from Hoopers department store.

To vote, pick a face out of the 80 entrants and call 09011 171 261 and you will be asked to speak the four digit number of your choice or text FOER and the entrant's four-digit vote number to 81800.

Your Views:

Keedie is an absolute star and should be the face to represent Torbay by right! She is an ambassador for all of us and deserves the highest honours available. Her family have been an inspiration to her and are now enjoying the success that Keedie has fully earned. I am proud to have been one of her teachers during her formative years at White Rock Primary, where she was a beautiful singer and a wicked footballer too! I wish Keedie, Kelly and their families everything they dream of. Bill :-)

SHOW WILL GO ONTO FIND 'FACE'
Finalists chosen for resort's big fashion night of the year.
By Phillipa Walker

Torbay's top modeling talent have strutted their stuff on the catwalk for a chance of being crowned The Face of the English Riviera.

More than 400 people packed into Torquay's Grand Hotel to watch the young hopefuls pit their fashion credentials against each other. The judges had their work cut out trying to whittle the 60 wannabes down to just 24, their decisions causing tears of both joy and disappointment.

The successful entrants will now be transformed ahead of the final on September 23, when they have the opportunity to learn and work alongside professional models at the English Riviera Fashion week show.

They include 23-year-old singing star
Keedie Babb who had only entered the charity competition when she went along to support a friend and was persuaded to put her face up for the title.

Her parents have already said that if Keedie, of Moorview End, Marldon wins, she'll hand the title over to a runner-up. But she said she'll sing at the final if she gets through.

Organiser Rebecca Laight, from the Talent Bank, said: "The competition is definitely getting more popular each year and the standard's going up.

"All the judges said this was the best bunch we've had yet. I was really pleased to see so many friends and family turn up to support the youngsters.

Young Hopefuls - Face of the Riviera 2006 entrants at the Grand Hotel

"The challenge now is to work with the final 24 and bring out their natural talent.

"When they're all seen at Riviera Fashion Week they will look quite different. They will have been transformed from everyday kids, just giving it a go, to looking like professional models."

In the run up to Fashion Week, Rebecca will be teaching them a routine, giving them catwalk training and they will be made-over with the help of award-winning salon Andrew Hill, in Newton Abbot.

The winner will be announced at the Fashion Ball on September 29 at the Riviera International Centre, Torquay.

Prizes include a place on the books of Dammers Modelling Agency, a professional portfolio by an international photographer, a fashion spread in Devon Today and £500 of Lancome beauty products from Hoopers department store.

The 24 models chosen for the final are: Jon Sims, Daisy Brent, Hannah Gillard, Tristan Sellors
, Keedie Babb, Carly Callaghan, Kelly Shaw, Thomas Winfield, Jessica Davies, Adam Zalabay, Mercedes Yeo, Kate Potts, Lee Reardon, Rhianne Parnell, Charlotte Saunders, DJ Wilson, Nikki Chrysanthou, Jazmine Norcott, Helen Pitman, Jade Wapling, John North, Ben Mayo, Helen Carnie and Emily Hardingham.

The annual competition is this year being held in aid of two charities: The Herald Express HAT Appeal and Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. Money raised from the raffle held during the semi-final will go towards the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer fundraising campaign.

IN SEARCH OF THE JE NE SAIS QUOI

Being the breakfast show presenter on Gemini FM I regularly get asked to pop along to various events in the Bay and South Devon throughout the year. It ranges from hosting big events like the Brixham Hapnin and Children's Week to cutting the ribbon at local primary school fetes.

I don't care what event it is. If it's local, I love to be involved. That's why this year when I got a call from Rebecca Laight from the Torbay Talent Bank, I was more than happy to help her out.

Rebecca is the driving force behind the "Face of the English Riviera."

The search started over a month ago. Rebecca isn't looking for a beauty queen, she's looking for a look, a certain silkiness, a certain je ne sais quoi.

There were a number of heats in the South Devon area and on Thursday night we took a little step closer to discovering who will be the 'Face of The English Riviera 2006' The final 24 hopefuls will be used along with professional models, on the night of the Riviera Fashion Show which takes place at the end of next month.

So how do you get more than 50 hopefuls down to 24?

A semi-final is always a good way and on Thursday I popped along to the Grand Hotel in Torquay.

It was mayhem.

There were people everywhere. I was at last year's heat and I'm sure it was a lot more manic this year.

Too many good looking people as well. Not including myself I hasten to add.

This year I was to announce the winners and once again be one of the judges.

It's a hard life.

My fellow judges, were the lovely Michelle Pugh, the regional digital director for Westcountry Media, Amanda Head from the Andrew Hill Salon, Phillipa Walker from the Herald Express, Phillip Steer the boss man at Hoopers in Torquay and finally Duke Johnson from his own little world.

They all seemed to know what they were doing, which was a blessing. What do I know about fashion and beauty?

Once upon a time I did have a blonde highlighted mullet and some tight leather trousers. The ladies of Paignton used to chase me around for hours.

Moving on before I excite you too much. The fashion show began. The music boomed out throughout the massive room at the Grand Hotel and the crowd hollered and cheered. So many good-looking young people, it was brilliant.

The judging was really hard.

Who was to go through?

Who was to go home disappointed?

Thomas Winfield got the crowd screaming after ripping off his top.

From my point of view it was a shame none of the women followed suit.

We gave our marks for each person and then we popped through to the library for some final deliberations.

It was heated and tense and after quite a while we came up with the finalists for the "Face of the Riviera 2006".

They are: Daisy Brent, Jon Sims, Hannah Gillard, Tristan Sellars
, Keedie Babb, Carly Callaghan, Kelly Shaw, Thomas Winfield, Jessica Davey, Adam Zalaby, Mercedes Yeo, Kate Potts, Lee Reardon, Rhianne Parnell, Charlotte Saunders, DJ Wilson, Nikki Chrysthanou, Jasmine Norcott, Helen Pitman, Jade Wopling, John North, Ben Mayo, Helen Carnie and finally Emily Hardingham.

Male semi-finalists in the Face of the Riviera 2006 contest at the Grand Hotel.

The winner will take home a contract with Dammers Modelling Agency, £500 of Lancome beauty projects from Hoopers, a professional portfolio, plus a fashion feature in Devon Today.

I'll be announcing the winner at the Riviera Fashion Ball.

It's going to be the grand finale of Fashion Week and if its anything like last years it will be pumping and very slick.

Eurovision Song Contest for 2007
Story courtesy of www.esctoday.com

Our colleagues at oikotimes.com have published an unconfirmed list of ten songs and acts that are lined up for the United Kingdom final "Making Your Mind Up"". As expected it includes the Swedish group Alcazar, as well as some other well known names.

The list of ten songs and acts is as follows: Katie Price One More Day - Lucie Silvas Long Farewell - Alcazar Mr. DJ - Rachel McFarlane I Believe - Lemar Sweet Dreams - Manhattan Blue Eyes Time Will Tear Us Apart - 2 To Go Say You'll Stay - Fused Come My Way - Luke Galliana There's No Other Way - Keedie A Fallen Angel

Katie Price is the real name of the supermodel Jordan, who has been romantically linked with singer Peter Andre, himself a composer in last years' Cypriot final. Whether this is the same Katie Price of course is unknown at this stage. Lucie Silvas is releasing her latest single Breathe In this month. Alcazar of course are the Swedish group that came third in the 2003 Swedish final MelodiFestivalen with the song Not A Sinner Or A Saint and have went onto become very successful throughout Europe since then. Lemar is another contestant from the BBC Fame Academy series, and has just released his latest single Is There Any Justice. If successful he would follow last years United Kingdom entrant James Fox, who was also a contestant on the show. 2 To Go were participants in the ITV show The X Factor, the male half of the duo is blind. Luke Galliano has previously been an entrant in the United Kingdom selection. In 2001 he entered with the song To Die For, which failed to make the final four songs that year.

Keedie recently had a duet with Duncan from the group Blue, and had hit with I Believe My Heart. It is interesting to note the apparent increase in the number of songs this year, in 2004 six songs competed in the final. However it has to be stressed that this is a provisional and unconfirmed list of participants, and esctoday.com will do its best to confirm or otherwise this list as soon as possible.
