'OVERWHELMING'
AUCTION FOR CHRIS
A huge auction
evening is taking place this weekend to raise money for
teenager Chris Keartland who suffered brain damage after
collapsing during a school sports day
More than 60 lots will come under the hammer at 7.30pm at the
Inn on the Green, Paignton, on Saturday to raise funds for the
14-year-old. Chris' school friends, their parents, teachers,
Torbay mayor Nick Bye, Gemini FM DJ Chris Edgecombe and
internationally famous singer Keedie
Babb will all
pull together to get the fund-raising event off the ground.
Chris' mum, Tina Keartland, 37, said: "I am just
overwhelmed. Both me and my husband David are just lost for
words. We are so touched by everything everyone has done to
help."
Chris is now in the John Parkes unit at Torbay Hospital after
being taken ill on July 4.
He had been watching the school's sports day when he suffered
a heart attack and collapsed.
His heart stopped beating for 13 minutes and, while medics
tried to restart it, Chris' brain was deprived of oxygen. He
was left severely brain damaged.
Thanks to the "wonderful" staff in John Parkes and
Chris' determination, he is now making amazing progress.
Speaking from the unit, Mrs Keartland said; "Chris is
doing fantastically; he has started to eat, he is talking and
can stand up with help. We're very pleased.
"We were told Chris had a severe brain injury so really
what's happening now shouldn't be happening. He is making a
remarkable recovery.
"He has got all his cheekiness back and he went to watch
a Galmpton v Paignton Pilgrims football match on Saturday. It
was very emotional but all the boys were really supportive and
Chris gave the ref a very hard time, it was just like I had my
14-year-old boy back again."
On Monday Chris will be going with his mum to Bath Hospital's
specialist head injury unit where he will stay for six weeks.
Mrs Keartland said: "We are keeping our fingers crossed
that he will be able to come home after that."
Auction organiser Samantha Richards said: "I arranged
this for Chris and for his family because when he comes out of
hospital he is going to need a lot of specialist equipment at
home.
"The support from local people has been amazing. I sent
out about 400 letters to local businesses and I have just had
offers coming through the post every day since."
Bill Callaghan, teacher at Chestnut Primary School, who used
to teach Chris between the ages of eight and nine at Roselands,
helped to organise the auction by getting Mayor Bye who will
be auctioneer, Edgey and Keedie
on board.
Remembering Chris in primary school, Bill said: "Chris
was a smashing lad, really hard working and a great
footballer.
"He has made amazing progress, there is a really big
light at the end of the tunnel but there's still a long way to
go."
On the importance of the auction, Bill said: "It is so
important because Chris is going to need a lot of specialist
equipment when he goes home."
Auction lots include a Manchester United glass signed by David
Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Ruud Van Nistelrooy, signed Plymouth
and Portsmouth football shirts, £340 of Torbay Leisure Centre
membership, a microwave, a magnum of champagne, hotel breaks
and restaurant vouchers.
Tickets cost £10 on the door to include food and a prize
draw.

Keedie
and Steve
Lend Their Support For The Devon Air Ambulance
|
Two of
Torbay's most talented entertainers arrived at the Yelloway
mobile motor coach museum on display at the Livermead House
Hotel on Torquay's seafront to lend their support to the charity
benefiting from the museum's brief stay - the Devon Air
Ambulance.
Chart topping songstress Keedie and "Comedian of the Year
2003/4" Steve Laister took time out from their busy
schedules to help boost funds for this wonderful life saving
service which is totally reliant on donations from the
public.
Steve pipped Keedie to the post in the Bay's Stairway to the
Stars talent show in 2000 and since then the pair, who have been
friends for many years, have gone on to great heights in the
world of entertainment. |

BIDDING
TO HELP CHRIS

Sometimes
you just have to stand back and go wow.
That's exactly what I did last Saturday night in Paignton. Plus I walked
away with a washing machine.
There was an auction for Chris Keartland. Who's he?
Chris is 14 years old, the only child to Tina and David. He goes to
school at Brixham Community College and nine weeks ago he had a heart
attack on his school sports day.
The Devon Air Ambulance was called and he was airlifted to Torbay.
Unfortunately Chris was unable to breath for 13 minutes which led to his
brain being starved of oxygen which has led to brain damage.
After a few days he was transferred to Bristol for more tests, which led
to his parents being told that he would not recover.
After a week at Bristol he was transferred back to Torbay to the John
Parkes Unit and since then he's been making so much progress.
He's smiling, talking, sitting up and can understand small tasks. He
even grins if you ask him about Chelsea. He won't when Arsenal beat them
next month.
Last Monday he went up to Bath Hospital where he will be receiving
intensive therapy.
After this devastating incident Chris's friends got together along with
their parents and put together this massive auction evening. The mayor
Nick Bye kindly donated his time to host the evening. The Inn on the
Green kindly donated the room.
Bill Callaghan, Chris's old teacher contacted me to see if I would pop
along and support and he got in touch with Keedie
Babb who sang superbly at
the interval.
Local businesses donated tons of goods and Chris's mates all helped as
well. Here's the names of a few of them: Ben Palmer, Max Prestwood, Tom
King, Carl Bradley, Adam Blackburn, Matt Richards, Tom Rabone, Lauren
Hallet, Ella Haladay and Hollie Portch.
The auction kicked off. The generosity was phenomenal. Bids were flying
in from everywhere. Nick and myself were like Ant and Dec with our
jovial banter. I did realise though that he was a lot posher than me
when he kept saying: "As soon as we get the first half out of the
way we can stop for supper." I kept saying we'll stop for a munch
at the buffet, I'm so common.
I couldn't help myself by mentioning that the next few items to auction
by Nick were St Kilda's in Brixham and Oldway Mansion. He carried on as
if nothing had been said. A true politician.
A Man United top went for £500 and I bought a washing machine for
£190. It was wicked.
My mate Mark Harbron from Proform Labour in Newton Abbot popped along to
show his support. A few weeks earlier I played and won some prizes in
his company's golf day at Axcliff golf course in Seaton and we raised
nearly £200.
Mark wasn't sure who to give the money to so I suggested give it to
Chris.
He did better than that. He phoned around his business contacts and
topped it up to £1,000. With all the rubbish that sometimes happens in
this world it is really humbling to see people care.
I've just received an e-mail from one of the auction organisers Sam. The
money raised on the evening was £7,555 plus the £1,000 from Mark at
Proform giving a grand total of £8,555 WOW.
Thanks to everyone who donated items to auction. Hopefully the money
will help make life just a little bit easier for Chris and his family.

KEEDIE
REVEALS HER DESIGNS ON XMAS

Classical
and pop songstress Keedie
Babb joined youngsters at
Ilsham Primary School drawing designs for the Herald Express Christmas
card competition.
Keedie, 23, from Marldon, topped the charts with her single I Believe
My Heart recorded with Duncan from Blue. She is also a revered
classical singer who takes part in concerts all over the world.
Keedie said: "I'm hopefully going to be at home with the family.
Fingers-crossed anyway. I have been away quite a lot this year in
Dubai and America.
"I love Christmas because we stay in our pyjamas for about three
days and eat lots of junk food. We have quite a big family and we are
all like big kids. We get the board games out and this year we have
Deal or No Deal."
Pupils at the school were busy drawing colourful designs, most opting
for Christmas trees be-decked with decorations with piles of presents
below.
Head teacher Lynn Atkinson briefly joined the pupils to help them
colour in their designs.
Nine-year-old Meris Ryan-Goff drew an orange and yellow angel for her
card design.
She said: "Sometimes my grandma and granddad come to my house for
Christmas and we have Christmas dinner. I want the third book in a
trilogy I'm reading for Christmas and maybe a Playstation two
game."
Alex Davey, six, said: "I like Christmas because you get lots of
toys and it's fun."
Jamie Sampson, seven, hopes to get a Nintendo for Christmas.
He said: "Last year I got a Christmas sack from Santa and a
Superman video."
